Calatheas are characterised by their striking foliage colours and often unusual flowers. Calathea cigar offers magnificent round leaves and chocolate coloured candlabra flower bracts that tower at 2m while calathea rattle snake and calathea wheat have unusual coloured and shaped flowers that are set off by the contrasting foliage.
Tree ferns are easily identified by their trunks that look like they are made of matted hair. With a root system that is the trunk of the tree, these ferns are fairly fast growing and are a fastastic way to create shade in a garden quckly and easily. Tree ferns are sold by the metre of trunk. Calathea Lutea (Havana Cigar)
Calathea Cigar is one of the largest calatheas with foliage that will grow upwards of 3m in the shade. This plant is characterised by its magnificent large round leaves that are green on top and silver underneath. Stems are also yellow in colour creating beautiful contrast just in the foliage. Cigar flowers usually around twice a year when every stem grows large candelabra shaped brown flower bracts that produce yellow day flowers. Fantastic for screening and as a feature in a garden, Calathea Cigar will tolerate cooler climates as well as the heat of FNQ
Calathea Wheat is a shade loving calathea that grow to around 1 - 1.5m in height. Foliage is lush green on top and vibrant purple underneath. The flowers look like a dried ear of wheat (hence the name) and are fantastic for both floral arranging and as a texture plant within a garden. Calathea wheat will tolerate cooler climates and will also tolorate full sun however best colour is seen when they are planted in the shade.
Calathea Ornata is a lower growing calthea with lush green leaves with distinct white stripes and purple underside to the leaf. Low growing and shade loving, they provide lovely colour year round with their colourful foliage. Great under trees and ferns, these calatheas help to create structure and texture in any landscape.
