Psittocorums are fast growing smaller heliconias that flower prolifically all year round. Plants and flowers range in size with the halloween, Tropica and golden torch varieties being the tallest with folaige that can grow to around 2 metres to the Petra, Parakheet and Red X that stay around that one metre in height. The plants are Rysome growers, producing a new flower stem from an existing stem. Once the stem has flowered it will not reflower. They will naturally fall over if left or even better why not cut them and put them in a vase!!
These plants are low maintenance and work well when you need to fill an area. If you are planting within your garden be aware that they will invade across a garden bed but when contained or used in an area where their edge can be mown they create a lovely display of colour and give you flowers all year round.
These plants grow particularly well in the tropics but can be grown down as far as Brisbane.

Golden Torch
Psittacorum x Spathocircinata Golden Torch is a larger variety of psittocorum with spectacular gold flowers. Flowers all year round from FNQ to Northern NSW. Can be planted in full sun or part shade. Will fill areas great for landscaping those hard to maintain areas.

Red Gold (Adrian)

Red cross
Psittacorum Red cross is a medium size variety of psittocorum with spectactular red and orange flower with orange bracts. Similar to common variety fire flash in colour, Red cross has been crossed with St Vincent red to make the flower larger while maintaining the vibrant colours of fire flash. Halloween
Psittacorum Halloween is the largest variety of psittocorum with fabulous gold and orange upright flower. It has quite distinct spotty foliage and differs from the smaller varieties in that the bracts of the flowers do not drop once the flower is picked. Flowers all year round from FNQ to Northern NSW. Can be planted in full sun or part shade. Is a more clumping variety than the smaller heliconias however will fill areas more vigourously than the larger crab claws and pendant heliconias.

Tropica
Psittacorum Tropica along with Halloween is the largest variety of psittocorum with a fabulous fanta orange upright flower. Unlike Haloween, the flower tends to twist as it gets bigger and the flowers is softer and not as good as Halloween as a cut flower. Flowers all year round from FNQ to Northern NSW. Can be planted in full sun or part shade. Is a more clumping variety than the smaller heliconias however will fill areas more vigourously than the larger crab claws and pendant heliconias.
