Erect heliconias include crab claws, gyros and other heliconias that have flowers that stand up straight. Smallest flower would be the dwarf Jamaican with plants that usually stand less than a metre high and have a miniture crab claw flower that is only approx. 20cm high and and about 15 cm wide on a stem about 50cm tall. The larger plants would be the carabeas and largest flowers would be the Maya Gold and Splash where the flower itself could be up to a metre in length.
Most of these larger varieities are low maintenance, clumping rather than running throughout your garden and work very well as screening plants to hide a fence or create privacy. We have identified the more invasive varieties in their individual product descriptions. The plants are Rysome growers, producing a new flower stem from an existing stem. Once the stem has flowered it will not reflower. They will naturally fall over if left but are fantasitc as a cut flower lasting for several weeks in water.
These plants are low maintenance and unlike the smaller heliconias stay in a clump rather than running throughout a garden. There foliage is made up of large leaves similar in shape to a banana plant. Many of these larger heliconias especially the orthotrica's have their main flower flush during the coolers month in far north queensland making them well suited to south east Queensland and northern New South Wales. Most will have a flowering season but some varieties such as the Claw 2 and Richmond Red throw flowers all year round.
