Anthuriums are a group of plants grown for their attractive foliage and striking flowers. Characterised by their heart shaped flowers (spathe) and pointed nose (Spadix) they come in a fantastic variety of colours and shapes.
Most of our Anthuriums are from the Andreanum family. We grow this particular variety for the cut flower market as these plants provide us with up to 12 long lasting flowers a year, with some varieties flowers growing to be around 6 inches in size. Plants are supplied bare rooted ready to go into a pot or the ground. We try to provide plants with a flower of between 2 and 3 inch size which will grow to full size flowers as the plant matures.
Anthuriums need to be grown in full shade so work very well in shade houses, verandahs, under trees, in pots and indoors. They need a loose medium to grow in such as quincan, orchid mix or similar. The new root buds on the anthurium plants appear below the leaf bulb - similar to an orchid. If you find your anthurium is starting to get a bit of a 'trunk' on it, don't be afraid to renovate the plant by cutting the trunk off and allowing the new roots to thrive.
Anthuriums are more suited to a temperate climate - we find in Cairns that during the summer months the flower quantities drop off and quality of flowers also decreases. Winter flowers tend to be larger, more profuse and longer lasting as cut flowers. These plants will grow well all the way down to Victoria but you would need to guard against heavy frost.
