Orthotricas and cooler weather - 19/06/2010 11:30pm
Was very excited walking around the farm the other day to find that the orthotrica heliconias are loving this cooler weather! Orthotricas are unique among the erect heliconias with their furry leaves, stems and flowers and their love of the cooler weather. While many of the larger crab claws will flush coming out of winter in Cairns, the orthotricas are flushing going into it.
This love of the cool means the orthotricas love it around Brisbane, Sunshine Coast and further down into NSW. They enjoy being planted in a mound, allowing water to drain away from their root system. They enjoy a bit of shade but if none is available will create their own. While other heliconias are slowing down with the cold it is great to see the ones that flourish!
